Does Marriott guarantee connecting rooms?

No — not across the chain.

Marriott treats connecting rooms as a request, filled by the front desk near arrival — even for lifetime top-tier members. The exception: a handful of individual hotels sell a guaranteed connector as a paid add-on. That’s the property doing it, not Marriott.

The exception: a paid add-on, at a few hotels

At a small number of Marriott properties you can buy a guaranteed connector through Marriott Bonvoy Tours & Activities. We read one in full — the Newport Marriott Hotel & Spa in Rhode Island:

  • You first book two specific room types — a King and a Queen/Queen — then purchase the connector add-on in advance.
  • A sibling Queen/Queen connector is listed from about $50 a night.
  • It excludes premium rooms: no suites, harbor views or atrium views.
  • Cancellation tightens to non-refundable two days out.

The page’s own footer says it plainly: Marriott Bonvoy Tours & Activities is not owned, developed or sold by Marriott International, and the activity is operated by the hotel through a licensed third party. The property guarantees it; the chain does not.

Why Marriott can’t promise it chain-wide

It isn’t bad faith. Marriott franchises most of its hotels to independent owners, and a chain can only guarantee a room it controls. The front desk at each hotel assigns rooms near arrival — and it genuinely doesn’t know what’s free until then. A late checkout or a maintenance issue, and a connecting pair that looked likely is gone.

That’s why the guarantee, where it exists at Marriott, comes from the individual property selling it — the hotel stepping in exactly where the brand can’t. See how Hilton and Omni solved the same problem →

If you’re booking Marriott anyway
  • Book direct and put connecting rooms as your only special request — a single clear request beats a list.
  • Call the property directly a few days out, then again the morning of arrival, when the front desk can actually see inventory.
  • Or sidestep it: book a two-bedroom suite, where the second bedroom is guaranteed because it’s one unit — no connecting request to fail.
